Lafayette is blessed with a great diner breakfast scene. Sunrise Diner is downtown Lafayette’s longtime player in this game. Located at the corner of 5th and Columbia Streets, it’s a convenient place for a post-Farmers-Market meal. My girlfriend and I did just that a few weeks ago. We were too late for the daily breakfast specials, but the regular menu offers plenty of choices.
Sunrise Diner has a slightly different feel than its peers. For one, even though it’s on one of the city’s busiest streets, it feels out of the way once you’re inside. And the staff certainly seem to enjoy razzing the customers. It’s all good-natured and feels appropriate for a restaurant that began as payment for construction work.
If you’ve read any of my reviews on this site, you know I have a thing for biscuits and gravy. Of course I had to try Sunrise’s offering. The biscuits were good and fluffy, if a bit floury. The gravy was a little plain. Some extra salt and pepper helped. Not a huge hash browns person, I ordered the American fries. I was expecting roughly-cubed pieces of potatoes. What I got instead was more like pub chips. Once I got over the surprise, they were delicious. The bacon was perfectly cooked, too.

One word of warning: Sunrise Diner is cash-only. They do have an on-site ATM if you didn’t bring your paper money.
