Sushi Don Asian Fusion

February 2, 2014 By Derrick Snyder

Sushi Don Asian Fusion opened in December 2013 in the former location of Maza II, at the northwest corner of US 52 and Main Street in Lafayette. Similar to Maza, Sushi Don specializes in Korean and Japanese fare. I was not aware that Maza II had closed, and when a friend asked me to have lunch there, I had no idea what restaurant she was talking about. After my excellent dining experience, I hope Sushi Don becomes talk of the town.

I went for lunch on a snowy Saturday afternoon. The interior looks a little outdated but otherwise was very clean and orderly. We were promptly seated by a very friendly and helpful waiter. Chopsticks were provided instead of forks. I’m not sure if you can ask for a fork, but I quickly got a hang of using chopsticks.

Sushi Don’s menu is the largest I’ve ever seen. There are literally hundred of items to order, including sushi, kimchi chigae (kimchi soup), bulgogi jungol (hot pot of marinated beef, rice and vegetables) and bibimbap (mixed rice), all with different sauces, meats and garnishes to mix. The drinks are pretty standard, but there was also a nice beer menu with cheaply priced ($2.50-$3.50) domestic and craft bottles.

My friend and I ended up ordering bulgogi jungol, mine with beef and hers without meat. Both came topped with a fried egg, sunny side up. I really can’t describe the smell except to say that it was amazing and that the taste was even better. The serving sizes are massive, and I would expect that most will not be able to finish this dish. Several side dishes came with our food too, including miso soup and an absolutely delicious cabbage slaw. The presentation of the food was exceptional and made me feel like I was dining in a much bigger city.

I found the prices more than reasonable. Food and beer combined, my bill was about $15. Sushi Don also has delivery and takeout menus posted on its Facebook page (linked above). Lafayette is very lucky to have such an excellent, authentic restaurant. If you’re not afraid of chopsticks and authentic Korean and Japanese meals, then I highly recommend Sushi Don Asian Fusion.
