I had an opportunity to go to Maza last night for dinner, and I’m glad I did. I get to update my review to reflect my current experience. It’s still in the old Pizza King/Sorrentos location on Sagamore Parkway, so the location for much of our area isn’t ideal, but it’s great for me since I live approximately 1.3 miles away.
As for the atmosphere, I would say it still needs work. It was very clean, but it had no style. Nothing to make it stand out. Clean is good, but the ambiance was lacking.
The menu has grown since I was last there, with a number of appetizers, soups, salads and a variety of veal, lamb, chicken, beef and pasta dishes as well as daily specials.
Somehow I walked out without getting photos of the specials, and I humbly apologize. One of the specials was called a Salmon Tower, and it was a beautiful tower of food that included salmon, eggplant, tomato, pesto, sauce and a few other things. It was truly a work of art, and judging from what the people were saying who ordered it, delicious. The other special was some sort of salmon pocket, and it also was lovely appearing.
I chose the Armenian chicken, which is described as “authentic, flavorful Armenian sauté with red & green peppers, Caucasian spices, and homemade soujouk (air-dried Armenian beef sausage.) It was served on a bed of rice and included a soup or salad.
I enjoyed the dish quite a bit, as well as the hummus we shared as an appetizer, and the lentil soup was good as well.
One of the things that caught my attention was a notice on the menu noting their particular attention to ingredients, including local produce when available, authentic Italian and Spanish rices, cheeses imported from France, Italy and Spain. Another note on the menu said that the chicken used in the chicken dishes was purchased locally. It’s hard for restaurants to commit to using local resources, so this is really impressive.
The service we had was great, with very nice and well groomed servers frequently refilling water and checking on our needs.
They also offer an extensive wine list and served locally brewed People’s beer. I would definitely recommend you go check out this place.
