My fiancée and I recently went out for a late lunch on the west side. It seemed only fitting that we’d go to the Westside diner. She’d been there a few times before and was eager to get my take. The location felt familiar — it’s the former site of the Route 66 diner, although it doesn’t have the same car theme. Westside has a typical mix of booths and tables, but it also offers a bar-height counter. That’s where we sat.
I ordered the chicken and waffles with some biscuits and gravy to wash it down. The waffle was very fluffy, and didn’t have a strong taste. It was a good vehicle for the chicken and syrup. The chicken was surprisingly moist. The batter had a good kick to it; it wasn’t Nashville hot chicken level, but it was enough to make my nose run a bit by the time I had finished. The biscuits had great volume and the gravy was wonderful. It had a slightly different taste that I can’t quite place — cinnamon, perhaps? In any case, it was delicious and it stands out from the crowd.
My fiancée ordered the Westside Breakfast — a typical eggs, meat, potatoes, and pancake fare. I stole a few bites of her pancakes and I was impressed. They’re thick, but evenly cooked. I couldn’t tell if they were sweet on their own or if that was just the syrup that had soaked in. The bacon was cooked just right and the hash browns were “very crispy, which is the way the should be.”
Westside diner also offers a lunch menu, but it’s always hard for me to pass up breakfast foods. As a service to you, dear reader, perhaps I’ll force myself to order lunch the next time I’m there. I’ll definitely be back. Don’t want to take my word for it? Let’s ask the gentleman who sat across the counter from me. He told the manager “this is the first place I think of for breakfast or lunch. The food is really good, the prices are reasonable, and every person I’ve talked to is so friendly.”
