I was on the way to go grocery shopping recently when I realized that I hadn’t had lunch yet. Shopping on an empty stomach is bad, I’m told, so it seemed like a great opportunity to get lunch. I’d been watching Escape Velocity Brewing try to get established for a while. But in the last year, I’ve only gone there to get growler refills. It was time to check the place out.
Tucked in a small shopping center off of Sagamore Parkway, Escape Velocity doesn’t stand out physically. The interior has a very “local brewery” feel (which makes sense, since it is). I was greeted quickly and went back outside to sit.
Since it was a hot day, I decided a lighter beer was in order. I’ve often traveled to the Czech Republic for work, so ordering the Lunar Day Czech Pilsner seemed like I was risking disappointment. But reader, I was very pleased. It tasted like many a beer I’ve enjoyed in Brno.

It took me a little bit to decide what to order, since everything sounded good. I ended up ordering the falafel sandwich with chips. The sandwich was delightful. The bread was well-toasted, with a satisfying crisp. It was just the right thickness. The ratio between bread and falafel was excellent. The falafel patty itself had a great flavor—strong, but not enough to overpower the toppings. The chips (from Broad Ripple Chip Company) were thick and delicious.

As a responsible restaurant reviewer, it was clear that I needed to get a dessert while I was there. The beer float—vanilla ice cream in an Irish stout—sounded intriguing, so I went for that. The beer was good and the ice cream was good. The combination was…a little odd. I don’t regret the decision, but I might opt for the root beer float next time.

One little detail I haven’t mentioned yet: although Escape Velocity doesn’t stand out physically, there is one thing that sets it apart from the other local breweries. Escape Velocity’s menu is entirely vegetarian, with many vegan options. So while you won’t find meat on the menu, there is plenty of great food to choose and some delicious beers to wash them down with.
