Many restaurants in the area are closed (at least for lunch) on Mondays. When my friend and I decided to get lunch on Monday, El Maguey was the third place we tried. But I was happy we did. The decor is your standard “very-brightly-decorated Mexican restaurant”. But unlike many restaurants, the salsa actually has some heat to it; most places have salsa that’s like, as my friend describes it, “dipping your chip into tomato soup with some onion in it.” We also ordered the guacamole. It was less flavorful than others I’ve had (including Meijer’s deli-packed guac, to be honest), but it was good.

I ordered the alambre hawaiiano. I couldn’t have made a better decision. It was sweet and savory. The portions were huge, but I was able to finish it without hating myself. I also ordered a peach margarita, which was a refreshing drink.

After my first visit, I went again with my kids. My daughter ordered a burrito. I don’t think the server understood that she wanted a kids burrito, because she got one as big as she is. She liked it, though, and it gave us several lunches worth of leftovers.

This brings me to the hard part: the food was pretty delicious both times I went. But the service was…not great. In both cases, the server was fairly attentive until the food arrived. After that, it was an adventure trying to get my check. I wouldn’t suggest El Maguey if you’re in a hurry, although they do have a drive-thru so maybe that’s an option in that case.
