Don’t let the name fool you. 6th Street Dive is not quite as much of a dive as they’d have you believe. Or at least not at lunch time on a Friday. I walked in carrying a 900-page novel and the friend I was meeting was wearing a suit. That doesn’t seem to be the norm among the regulars, but nobody gave us nasty looks. But it does have a slightly dark, cozy feel that you want from a dive bar.
But more than the ambiance, you want food. We had an appetizer of chips and salsa. The salsa was good and thick — I thought it was chili at first. It had a kick, but the heat didn’t linger. The star of the show, though, was the chips. They were well-cooked and thick. No breakage on dunks.
I ordered the breaded tenderloin, which came with French fries. The fries were fairly generic. They came out well-cooked but lukewarm. A warm version of these fries would probably have been pretty good. The tenderloin was large, as any good Indiana tenderloin is. It was a little thicker than I’m used to, but not too thick. The bun was thick and just slightly buttery. Together with the tenderloin it made for a solid lunch.
The service was great — friendly and attentive — with the food coming out quickly. In an neighborhood with few restaurant options, 6th Street Dive is an unexpected jewel.
