Cellar 422

October 31, 2015 By Lafayette Eats

IMG_9392I’m not going to lie… I was pretty excited when I heard this place was opening. I love wine, and I love going to places where I can sit back, hang out, and drink a glass or two.

This new wine bar was opened by two sisters, who had a vision of creating a place where people could relax and drink a glass of wine. Last night I had the opportunity to visit, and I’m happy to report that I loved it.

It’s a tiny space, located at 422 Main, with only 1000 square feet. It’s lovely inside, very nicely decorated. Contemporary and chic, there is a handful of tables with a mixed variety of chairs… some upholstered, some wooden. Very classy, but comfortable. In the far back corner is a bar with shelves of wine.

It was fairly busy, but we claimed an empty table. We were given three different menus: a food menu, a wine by the class menu, and a wine by the bottle menu.

The food menu is very small. In fact, I don’t think the intent was to have food, but for the alcohol license there had to be some offerings. You could get a cheese plate, warm brie and bread, some flatbread pizzas, and soup or salads.

We started with a bottle of wine, along with the brie and bread plate, and I couldn’t be more happy with our choices. I don’t know what they put in that bread, but it was SO good. We demolished it in short order. The brie was warm and gooey, with some kind of fruit topping. All of it served with grapes and apple slices.

We ate that, drank our bottle of wine, and also ordered a flatbread pizza with goat cheese, bacon, and figs. It was very nice, but not as nice as the bread and brie. We ended up ordering a second platter of bread and brie, to go with our second bottle of wine.

When asked how we wanted the bill, we split it four ways and we were shocked at the cost. Less than $20 per person for everything. I would have expected it to be much more. I’m guessing prices will increase as they expand, but we all left very happy with our evening, our wine, and the food.

We didn’t get to check out the patio, because it was pretty chilly, but I can say the bathroom was super clean and nicely decorated. I do like a nice public bathroom.

The service was great. We had water filled up all the time, pleasant conversation about wine choices, but not overbearing or annoying. Just the right amount of attention.

Overall, we had a great time, and I’ll definitely be back. Lafayette has sadly been missing something like this since Uncorked went out of business. Two thumbs up!

Kid Friendly: No, it’s a bar.
