You may have noticed that Lafayette Eats has been fairly silent in recent months. It’s not that I’ve given up writing reviews… more that there’s not much left for me to review! The other day, I was eating at El Chicano and noticed across the street a new place called Blue House Restaurant and Grill. It’s in the same location that Panini Deli was. I don’t know if it’s the same people or under new management. In fact, it’s been so long since I’ve eaten at Panini Deli, I barely remember it.
Anyway, today I had an opportunity to eat at this place and I’m glad I did. We came in at 12:15 for lunch, and we were only the second lunch goer there. It’s new with not much of following as of yet and I don’t think this is the ideal location either. However, being the only person in a restaurant has never bothered me. We were greeted warmly and offered a place to sit.
With a name like Blue House, I was expecting maybe Greek food, or Mediterranean food. I don’t know why I would expect that, it’s just what came to my mind. The menu itself was a little of this, a little of that. You could go American with burgers or wings, or you could go Greek with their “Santorini Bread” (rol. sliced with mozzarella and feta cheeses, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and roasted red peppers.) You could go Italian with one of their pasta dishes, or even get seafood or tacos. In short, you can circle the globe in one restaurant. This may seem odd, but I found it quirky and fun.
When we entered, there were also a number of specials on a dry erase board. In fact, so many specials I had to go back and double check them before I ordered.
I chose one of the specials, a hot ham and cheese with tomato basil soup. My friend chose the tacos carnitas. Both items were really good. The soup was really flavorful. I think the sandwich may have been a little better on a less traditional bread choose, but it was good. When my friend’s tacos arrived at the table, I had a bit of buyer’s remorse because they looked really delicious. Luckily, she’s a good friend and gave me one. It was a really tasty taco, served on corn tortillas with a sauce on the side.
There seemed to be only one server (and since there were hardly any other diners, that’s all that was necessary) but she was very nice. My water glass was continually refilled and she was around but not overbearing.
The place itself wasn’t fancy. Very casual atmosphere. I’d definitely recommend giving it a chance if you have the opportunity.
