Review: Finally! My description about how this site covers Lafayette, West Lafayette, and surrounding areas is true because we traveled to the fine city of West Point to eat dinner last night! We couldn’t decide on where to eat, I wanted to try something new (as I always do) and so we decided to drive the 15 minutes to West Point to try out their (I think only) restaurant.
When we arrived there were a lot of cars parked outside, but the family dining area seemed pretty dead. We were immediately seated and given menus. There is also a bar area that we didn’t go into, but the family dining area was nice with one large room separated with a wall halfway so it almost seemed to be two rooms. The music (or shall I say Muzak?) was an interesting choice, but not too loud so we didn’t notice it for most of the meal.
The menu offers a variety of grilled items – steak and chicken, pork chops, shrimp, and ribs. Also on the menu were a variety of other choices, a selection of alfredo pastas, pulled pork and salads. They also offered a nightly specials menu, which I always like.
I ordered the Smothered Chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus and my husband got the ribs. We both started with soup, I chose the French Onion and he choose the daily special, Clam Chowder. The French Onion was pretty good but my husband reported that the clam chowder was pretty bland. We also got rolls at our table right away, which were pretty disappointing. White dinner rolls, which I’d be surprised if they weren’t the brown and serve variety.
My husband was wary of ordering the ribs because the description said something about sweet and tangy, but he reported they were quite good. We both really enjoyed the asparagus that came with it. I am almost entirely positive that my garlic mashed potatoes were from a box, and they were not good. I’ve never met a potato I didn’t like, and I couldn’t finish them.
The smothered chicken was good. The meat was juicy and it was covered in thick slices of cheese, bacon bits, and mushrooms. The mushrooms were really tasty.
Since this was a date night, I opted for dessert and coffee. The coffee was good and the turtle cheesecake was big and decadent – so rich I couldn’t finish it, but delicious.
I would also like to include that their website needs some serious work, with links that didn’t work etc, so I wouldn’t bother going there. The download for their menu does not work.
Overall, it was a interesting trip. It had its highs and lows and is probably the best West Point has to offer. I wouldn’t go there for any kind of special occasion, but it was a nice change of scenery with no waiting. The service was very good – our server was very friendly and I noticed the owners were around as well. (Also, it seemed everyone knew each other there, which is often what happens in a small town restaurant.)
