Review: I had the pleasure of stopping by Little Mexico 2 today. It’s located in a strip mall at the corner of Earl and South Streets. I’ve eaten at Little Mexico before, but it’s been a while, so I definitely needed to go again before writing a review. It’s a smaller restaurant, with lots of standard Mexican decor. I was immediately taken to a nice booth and had chips and salsa on my table before I even sat down. (That’s not a joke. They were on the ball.)
The chips and salsa were really good, and that’s a general barometer of Mexican dining for me – must have good salsa. The chips were warm too, which is nice. The waiter arrived quickly and took my drink order and gave me a little time with the menu.
When evaluating a menu, I try to look for house specialities or favorites, because I tend to think those are their best choices. One of the options I saw was the taquito special, which came with one beef and one chicken taquito. It came with rice, but I had to order beans on the side, because I really love refried beans. Another gauge of good Mexican food – must have good beans.
After I placed my order, I proceeded to munch on chips and salsa, but before I could barely get a chance my food was ready and at my table. Okay, maybe not that fast, but I rarely get my food before we polish off a basket of chips. It was really fast.
The beans were good, but I have to say that I was really disappointed in the taquitos. I normally like taquitos, but these had a funny taste that I just couldn’t get past. I tried, I really tried to eat the taquitos, but they just didn’t taste good. However, I do need to add that the rice was extraordinarily good, and I am not generally a fan of Spanish style rice. I always try it, and usually don’t like it, but the rice here was really excellent. I ate it all.
I’ll definitely go back and try something else. I thought the service and speed was excellent and I think it deserves another go. It’s entirely possible that I just didn’t like that one item, but another item may be awesome.
