I may have just had the best hot dog of my life at DT Kirby’s. And, I don’t say that lightly. I’m a big fan of the genre. There may have been others that compare, but memory of them escapes me at the moment. I had the Sonoma dog. I can’t remember what all was in it, but in addition to the dog, there were jalapenos, lettuce, and, I think, bacon and tomatoes. In any case, it was phenomenal.
The venue is unassuming. It’s a bar. In addition to the main bar, there are several tables along the opposite wall. Napkins are in the form of paper towels on a roll set on the table. There are plenty of big screen televisions, so you can see what is on. And, they appeared to have a decent selection of beer – though I was on a lunch break from work, so I didn’t indulge. In addition to the hot dog, I got a side of onion rings. They appeared to be homemade, and they were delicious as well.
If you’re looking for great tasting food and maybe a beer or two, this is a good choice. If you’re looking for healthy cuisine and a fancy setting, not so much.

Had lunch at DT Kirby’s after hearing about their fantastic burgers. Well, I must say – best burgers in town! Hands down! The fries are handcut and come with a yummy sauce, in lieu of ketchup.
Service was OK, but I noticed the owner made a point to stop by every table and chat.
I will definitely go back – great place!
Had their Chicago Dog. They apologized for being out of Vienna beef and made it with a regular hot dog – their acknowledgment of this made an impression on me – they know their dogs! I’ve been to the Wiener’s Circle and other famed Chicago locations, and I’d say it was still all a Chicago Dog should be. Decent beer on tap, plus they were amenable to changing tv channels to suit our obscure sport-spectating interest as well.
I have dined at DT Kirby’s often and I am especially fond of eating dinner there during a Bears or Cubs game. It is always a good time and everyone there seems like a tight-knit family. I loved the Reuben from there and can never get enough of the sauce that comes with the fries.
Hands down the best bar and grill in Lafayette…There is nothing below outstanding on their menu. In addition to the great burgers and dogs, they have the best fish sandwich I’ve ever had. Having lived in Chicago for years, this place is more Chicago than many Chicago bars….try it…NOW!!!
there is no reason to go anywhere else for sandwiches in lafayette.
it’s like being in the culinary center of the universe without leaving downtown lafayette, IN.
i am a little biased toward chicago food, if you eat at dt kirby’s you’ll see why
DT Kirby’s happily teaches the only thing good about chicago to the uninitiated, one humongous, sloppy, gigantic, reasonably priced sandwich at a time.
so worth it to eat there even if you hate sports & think chicago is a corrupt sewer of crooked politicians, screamingly high taxes on freakin’ everything, too much traffic, crowds, crime & noise. eat at dt kirbys & you can skip the 2 1/2 hr drive, 3+ tolls & all that gas money & stress & road rage!!!
After reading great reviews, we went to DT Kirby’s for dinner. We were not disappointed. We got the fried veggie basket for an appetizer. Hands down, this was the best fried veggies we have ever had! This is an absolute must if you go there! Also, the Philly Cheesesteak is amazing. It is enough to feed 2, but amazing!
WOW, what a GREAT place. Had the Philly steak sandwich (after much internal debate). It was awesome (and redefined HUGE – my SO split it with me and we could easily have been full before it was gone). At least 7 stars out of 5!!!!
Well reading most of the highly recommended reviews on here and ready to enjoy a “Chicago Style Dog”. I sat down and ok no problems food can overcome atmosphere most of the time. But in this case neither was very appealing. I order my Chicago dog and it comes in a basket which at this time is still good. On the menu it states the buns either come toasted or steamed. They forgot to put microwaved on there because that is what my bun was. And no celery salt for the dog…when I asked the server if there was any celery salt on the dog she answered no. I asked I believe it comes with it and she replied ok I will go check. She came back and stated that they were out. For those of us that know….huge part to the dog is the celery salt. Now on to the bun. It was microwaved and by the time it came to eat the dog the bun was stuck to the wax paper covering the basket it was served in…..and not to mention hard because it had cooled down. Not part of the Chicago style dog experience but they serve all dogs with potato chips……UMM sick …. yuk…. they were colder than room temperature and about as old and stale as 3 day old donuts left on the counter unwrapped. For $6.59 for lunch it truly was an experience that I will never go to again. AJs HERE WE COME. And I promise I am not an employee of Ajs……Just a very disapointed Chicago Hot dog fan!
A friend of mine came to visit earlier this year, and we opted to go to Kirby’s because we’d never gone before.
Kind of a cool pub, but both my boyfriend and I got food poisoning from this place and were sick for days. It was NASTY.
Atmosphere is a LOT better in the bar than in the adjacent dining-only restaurant, but it’s nice there’s some option for groups with kids. Service leaves a lot to be desired. While the owner is great, his staff seem pretty unmotivated.
That said, the food is amazing. The Triple Hog is a favorite–sort of like a mutant version of a cuban. Once you pick it up, you’re committed to finishing, because I’m not sure you’d be able to set it down and pick it back up again. Delicious!
Overall, worth going, and with as hard as the owner works, I’m hopeful he can get some better staff and make this place into all it could be.
