Review:  The Lafayette Brewing Company is a casual-to-nice restaurant in the eastern part of downtown Lafayette. The burgers are good and, as the name suggests, they brew their own beer. They have some fine root beer as well.

As someone who works downtown, it is one of my primary choices for eating at lunch time. As I mentioned, the burger is the stand-by for me. But, they have wraps, a killer cheddar-ale soup, and a variety of other menu items.

I have never had the beer on tap at the location, opting for the root beer instead during work hours. However, they have recently started distributing their beer in bottles to local liquor stores. I wasn’t personally very keen on the Tippecanoe Common Ale, but for my tastes, their Black Angus Oatmeal Stout was outstanding.

The service is usually reasonably quick and competent. During the afternoon, there are usually plenty of tables in the back which makes it a good place to have a business lunch meeting. They have music acts on Friday and Saturday nights and a calendar page to advise patrons of upcoming events.

The Lafayette Brewing Company is a solid local institution, and I would be comfortable recommending it to anybody.

Kid friendly: Sure. It’s a bar and a brewery, but if that isn’t a hang up for you, they have a kids menu, and the atmosphere is friendly enough.

Methods of payment: Cash or credit.

Price Range: Between $5 and $10 for sandwiches, and between $10 and $20 for entreés.

I sampled several of their beers: the Common Ale, Piper’s Pride, Wit, and Stout. The Wit was a little weak, reminded me of commercial light beer. I didn’t care for the Common Ale – I didn’t find it well balanced, though I know it’s a drinkable favorite of many regulars. Piper’s Pride was better, but the stout really stood out for me. I think it could hold its own against some of the country’s top-quality microbrews.

Good brews (and better food than at Chumley’s)! Always a favorite!
