Review: Big Apple Bagels is located at the corner of 9th and Twykenham on Lafayette’s south side. It shares space with The Other Pub. I really love it when restaurants are close enough for me to bike there, so going out for bagels is a treat.

This restaurant has a handy drive thru, for picking up bagels and coffee on the go, but they have a nice inside eating area. It’s clean with plenty of tables, and wasn’t very busy when we went in, so we were able to take our time ordering. I’m a bagel purist, and tend to stick with plain. Their plain bagels are extremely tasty, however I’ve learned to ask for cream cheese on the side, because they tend to lay it on thicker than I prefer. That’s just a personal preference. They offer a variety of bagel flavors and a row of coffee options that are brewed fresh daily. They also have a selection of breakfast sandwiches and muffins. I haven’t tried anything but the bagels, so I can’t speak for anything else on the menu, but the coffee was good. (And they had Splenda there – always a bonus.)

I would like to add here that Big Apple Bagels has one of the cleanest, nicest restaurant bathrooms I’ve ever been in. Seriously, I was not expecting it to be so clean or nice, but it really was. I’m usually fairly grossed out by restaurant bathroom floors, but this one was shiny and neat. Double bonus.

They also offer a variety of coffee drinks, including lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas. Their menu boasts lunch sandwiches and soups as well.

Although I can’t vouch for the majority of the menu, I’d have to say if you want a good cup of coffee and a tasty bagel, go ahead and stop by Big Apple Bagels.

I went to Big Apple Bagels with my father when he came to town. There were some funky bagel flavors so we thought we should throw caution to the wind and order them. Big mistake. We ordered the apple pie bagel and the blueberry bagel. Both were hard to eat. The apple pie bagel tasted so sugary that it wasn’t really a bagel at all. The blueberry bagel was glazed. I was hoping for a more tradition blueberry bagel that is all bagel with some blueberry flavor.

This place is so close to my house, I was hoping to have somewhere to walk or bike to with my son in the mornings. Guess we’ll have to find somewhere else. Too bad.
