Review: I’ve been to Kathy’s Kandies on a few occasions, but we went again tonight because I really wanted some crème brûlée and I knew they had it there. The proprietor, Kathy, really knows her candies. In the past when I’ve gone in, I’ve always felt that Kathy was a bit surly. In fact, after the first few times, I stopped taking it personally and just assumed that was her demeanor but tonight she was friendly and efficient. The shop is larger than one would expect, and very nicely organized with large glass cases full of delightful looking chocolates. I haven’t tried much on the menu, but my kids seem to think the blueberry muffins are great, and I really dig the crème brûlée. If the service is occasionally surly, I can deal with that.
Kid friendly: Yes.

I have to agree with your customer service assertions.
I’ve been to Kathy’s several times over a one year period. The chocolate is decent, though much of it appears to sit under the glass for extensive periods of time. Also, the chocolates, though handcrafted, are not hand-dipped, which gives them a Walmart-like appearance. Although the chocolates are decent (especially the extensive variety of mint truffles) the customer service is terrible. The staff is unfriendly and un-knowledgeable, and the purported owner has little interest in responding to customer needs. Unfortunately, instead of smelling chocolate when entering the store, I have encountered the smell of backed-up sewage on one occasion–a characteristic that may say something about “Kathy’s” sanitation techniques. I would not recommend Kathy’s Homemade Kandies if you have to go to the store to purchase them yourself. If you have a brave friend to purchase them for you, then by all means: enjoy.
16 Aug 09 at 2:02 am #We like to go to Kathy’s on Saturdays, after we’ve been through the farmer’s market and walked around downtown. The kids love it, and we have absolutely no complaints at all about the smell (as mentioned above) or the staff. The truffles are good, and the chocolate suckers are the right size for our little ones. We’ve been treated very kindly and always look forward to going back!
15 Nov 09 at 10:36 pm #I find Kathy’s Kandies a delightful place. Yes, the staff can be short, but who isn’t when things are rushed. I’m there on any day of the week, and I’ve NEVER smelt anything funny. All I’ve ever smelt when I went in was candy in the making.
I’ve never thought that it had a Walmart appeal. I’m not sure what the post above is talking about with that one. Since I’m in there quite frequently, I see the candy go through its rounds.
13 Dec 09 at 9:38 pm #I love kathy’s. If you ever have a chance, try the truffle hot chocolate or the brownie ice cream sundae! They are much cheaper than other ice cream stores.
The service has always been nice when I have visited, and Kathy is always helpful when making a suggestion.
The fondue is very good, but make a reservation so you don’t have to wait. You get a large variety of cakes, fruits, and pretzels. The chocolate is prefectly heated.
The hard candies are reasonably priced. The chocolate can get expensive, so make sure you like whatever it is that you are buying. The ice cream and desserts are very well priced.
If you don’t like the rush, go on Sunday in the mid-afternoon. It is nice to walk the shops and stop for a cup of cocoa and your favorite dessert!
15 Feb 10 at 3:48 pm #I love Kathy and her candies! Both she and her staff are friendly and helpful. The turtles are wonderful as are the whoopie pies and aztec truffles. And who can beat a 32oz. soda for $.99!?!?
As for the smell, she sometimes orders or reheats her lunch in the back. Since she’s open 7 days a week from morning to evening, she doesn’t have a lot of spare time! Plus it’s so rare – you’re usually greeted by the delicious aromas of brownies, cookies, chocolates, or anything else awesome that she makes!
